
For this project, I was tasked with creating a magazine-style infographic for Tech Crowd, a publication that focuses on technology, business, and lifestyle. The assignment was to take a data set and transform it into a compelling one-page layout that both informed and visually engaged the reader. I chose the topic “Who Is Smartphone-Dependent by Demographic”, focusing on age, race, and education level. These variables revealed clear contrasts in dependency rates and told an important story about how technology affects different communities.
I started by analyzing the data, identifying the key insights I wanted to highlight. From there, I sketched out a few rough layout ideas before moving into Adobe InDesign to build the page grid. I selected three visualizations that worked best for the narrative: a line chart showing smartphone dependency growth by age from 2013 to 2021, a bar chart for education level, and a column chart for race/ethnicity.
This mix of chart types allowed me to show both trends over time and disparities between groups in a way that was easy to read at a glance.
Typography and color played a big role in setting the tone. I leaned on the Tech Crowd brand style guide, using Aileron Heavy for headers and Aileron Regular for body text to keep the voice clean and modern. For the palette, I pulled in branded hues like Tech Blue, Cloud, and Crowd Green, using them strategically to build hierarchy and contrast without overwhelming the charts. To add a human touch, I incorporated a small smartphone icon as a visual anchor, tying the data back to the real-world object at the center of the story.
The final deliverable is a one-page infographic spread that feels both editorial and data-driven. The layout balances text with visuals, guiding the reader through the story step by step—starting broad with overall growth in dependency and then zooming into demographic differences. Every design choice, from the grid structure to the color contrasts, was made to enhance readability while keeping the visuals dynamic and engaging.
